FIBC Lifting Options

The lifting arrangement connects the FIBC to the customer’s forklift, hoist or filling frame. It must be selected together with the safe working load, bag geometry, handling equipment, available headroom and the way the filled load behaves. Loop style is therefore a functional part of the approved bag specification, not a cosmetic option.

Common Lifting Arrangements

  • Four corner loops: a widely used arrangement in which each loop is engaged by the intended lifting device.
  • Cross-corner loops: loops extend across the corners and can improve accessibility during forklift handling.
  • Side-seam loops: loop placement follows the side seams and the defined bag construction.
  • Stevedore or secondary straps: auxiliary straps can bring loop engagement points together for a specified handling system.
  • Lifting sleeves or tunnels: application-specific sleeves may be developed around compatible forklift geometry.

Information Needed Before Selection

Provide the lifting device, fork or hook dimensions, spacing, available clearance, target net weight, expected centre of gravity, handling frequency and whether the FIBC will be lifted from a pallet, filling frame or transport vehicle. The loop height, width, colour and attachment construction are confirmed in the production drawing.

Safe Handling Principles

Use every lifting device required by the approved design. Keep forks level, suitably spaced and free from sharp edges; avoid shock loading, dragging, twisting loops or standing beneath a suspended FIBC. Inspect the bag and lifting components before use, follow the handling label and consult the supplier for the specific application.

Reference Framework

For non-dangerous goods, ISO 21898:2024 covers FIBC materials, construction, design, type testing, marking, selection and safe use. Electrostatic classification for FIBCs used in hazardous explosive atmospheres is addressed separately by IEC 61340-4-4:2018. Dangerous-goods applications require the applicable transport rules and an approved UN design type. The final approved specification and handling label govern the supplied FIBC.
