How to Select the Right FIBC Big Bag for Industrial Bulk Materials

Selecting a Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container (FIBC) begins with the material and the handling process—not with bag dimensions alone. A suitable specification must reflect how the product flows, the load it creates, the equipment used at the filling and discharge points, and the conditions it will face during storage and transport.

Providing complete application data at the quotation stage helps the supplier recommend an appropriate construction and reduces the risk of incompatibility during production or use.

1. Define the material to be packed

State the product name, bulk density, particle size, moisture sensitivity, temperature and flow behavior. Fine powders, abrasive minerals, granules, fertilizers and food ingredients may require different fabrics, coatings, seams or liners.

Also identify any special requirements involving dust control, electrostatic risk, food contact, contamination prevention or hazardous materials. These factors must be evaluated before the bag type is confirmed.

2. Confirm target load and safety requirements

Specify the intended net filling weight and required safety factor. The Safe Working Load (SWL) and safety factor are determined by the application and whether the FIBC is intended for single-trip or approved multi-trip use. Never select a bag by volume alone.

Bag dimensions should also match the packed product, pallet, warehouse layout, shipping container and stacking plan. A stable filled shape can improve storage and transport efficiency.

3. Select lifting loops and handling design

Four-loop FIBCs are widely used, but one- and two-loop formats may suit particular filling systems or handling methods. Loop position, length and construction must work with the forklift, crane or lifting equipment used by the buyer.

Tell the supplier how the bag will be lifted, moved and emptied. Handling equipment and operator practices are part of the specification and should not be treated as an afterthought.

4. Match the filling and discharge configuration

Open-top, filling-spout and skirt-top designs support different filling processes. At the bottom, a flat base, discharge spout or other controlled-emptying option may be required. Inlet and outlet dimensions should match the customer’s equipment and desired flow rate.

Closures, ties and protective flaps should also be defined where product containment or clean handling is important.

5. Decide whether coating or an inner liner is needed

Uncoated fabric may be suitable for some free-flowing materials, while coated fabric or a polyethylene liner can provide additional containment for powders or moisture-sensitive products. Liner type, thickness, shape and attachment method should be selected according to the packed material and filling process.

A liner does not automatically make every FIBC suitable for every product. The complete bag-and-liner system must be reviewed together.

6. Clarify production and documentation requirements

Food, pharmaceutical, chemical and other sensitive applications may require clean-room production, traceability, testing, metal detection or specific quality documentation. Buyers should state the required standards, certificates and test records before quotation so availability can be confirmed for the selected facility and specification.
