FIBCs for food ingredients and pharmaceutical raw materials require more than a clean appearance. Food-contact suitability concerns the regulatory status of every relevant material and component, while hygienic manufacture concerns how contamination, foreign matter and traceability are controlled during production and packing.
The required level must be agreed for the actual product, market and filling process. Resin, fabric, coating, liner, sewing thread, printing ink, labels and other components may all form part of the assessment. Documentation must correspond to the selected construction and intended conditions of use.
Food-Contact Materials and Hygiene Controls
For EU food-contact projects, the specification may need to consider Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, good manufacturing practice under Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 and, where applicable, Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 for plastic materials and articles. A declaration or supporting document is meaningful only when it identifies the applicable material, intended use and relevant limitations.
Hygiene controls can include protected material flow, controlled cutting and sewing, loose-thread management, cleaning, foreign-body inspection, metal detection, traceability and protected packing. Requirements for a recognized food-safety or packaging certification, or for classified clean-room production, must be confirmed against the selected production facility before quotation.
Defining a Sensitive-Product FIBC
Provide the product identity, direct or indirect food-contact status, target market, contact conditions, filling temperature, particle size, moisture sensitivity, liner requirement and contamination controls. Pharmaceutical applications also require the customer to define the relevant quality system, cleanliness, sampling, change-control and documentation expectations.
The terms “food grade”, “pharma grade” and “clean room” should not be treated as interchangeable. The final description, labels and documents must match the approved materials, production route and evidence available for that specific order.
Custom Production and International Orders
Materials, hygiene controls, liner, traceability and required documents are defined for the specific application before production. Minimum order quantity varies by construction. Production lead time and container-loading options depend on the product type, order quantity and international delivery plan.
