FIBC Filling Options and Top Designs

The FIBC top must match the filling equipment, product flow, required containment and closure method. Chute size alone is not sufficient: filling rate, entrained air, dust extraction, liner arrangement and the available connection method also affect the design.

Common FIBC Top Options

  • Open top: unrestricted access for suitable products and filling methods where closure and contamination protection are not required.
  • Duffle or skirt top: a full-width flexible extension that can be gathered and tied after filling.
  • Filling spout: a defined inlet designed around the filling chute and closure arrangement.
  • Filling spout with cover: an additional flap or cover can protect the closed spout during handling.
  • Conical top: a shaped top may support the filling behaviour of selected low-bulk-density or difficult-flowing products.

Specification Inputs

We review chute diameter and shape, target filling rate, aeration or de-aeration needs, dust collection, required headroom, bag support during filling, closure access, liner connection and contamination-control requirements. Product trials may be advisable when the powder bridges, generates significant dust or traps air.

Liners and Electrostatic Conditions

A liner inlet can be loose, secured or form-fit according to the required filling connection. For electrostatic-sensitive applications, the complete combination of FIBC, liner, labels and document pockets must be assessed; one component must not be selected independently from the tested system.

Reference Framework

For non-dangerous goods, ISO 21898:2024 covers FIBC materials, construction, design, type testing, marking, selection and safe use. Electrostatic classification for FIBCs used in hazardous explosive atmospheres is addressed separately by IEC 61340-4-4:2018. Dangerous-goods applications require the applicable transport rules and an approved UN design type. The final approved specification and handling label govern the supplied FIBC.
