What is an FIBC or Big Bag?An FIBC, or Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container, is a flexible industrial container designed for handling, storage and transport of dry bulk materials. The correct construction depends on the packed product, target load, filling and discharge process, lifting equipment and applicable regulations.

What information is needed to specify a Big Bag?Provide the product name, bulk density, particle size and flow behaviour, target net weight, filling temperature, moisture and dust sensitivity, filling and discharge equipment, lifting method, pallet or container limits, storage conditions, destination and any food, pharmaceutical, dangerous-goods or electrostatic requirements.

How are Safe Working Load and safety factor selected?Safe Working Load is the maximum load assigned to the approved FIBC design. The safety factor relates to the required design and test performance; it is not permission to overload the bag. Both values must be confirmed for the documented construction and shown on the handling label.

Can a standard FIBC be used for dangerous goods?No general-purpose FIBC should be assumed suitable for dangerous goods. The substance must be correctly classified and packed in an approved UN design type that meets the applicable transport rules, test requirements, marking and manufacturing controls.

When does an FIBC need an inner liner?A liner may be required for fine powders, hygiene, contamination control or a defined moisture, oxygen, odour or chemical barrier. Tube, form-fit and other liner constructions are selected around the product and process. The complete FIBC-and-liner combination must be reviewed, particularly for electrostatic-sensitive applications.

What is the difference between a standard FIBC and a Q Bag?A Q Bag, also called a baffle or form-stable FIBC, contains internal baffles that help the filled bag retain a more rectangular profile. This can improve pallet and container-space use. A standard FIBC has no internal baffles and normally expands further at the sides when filled.

Which FIBC filling top should I choose?Common choices include open top, duffle or skirt top, filling spout and conical top. Selection depends on the filling chute, filling rate, dust collection, closure method, liner connection, contamination control and available headroom.

Which FIBC discharge bottom should I choose?Options include flat bottom, discharge spout, protected or double spout, full-open discharge and conical bottom. Product flow, bridging tendency, receiving hopper, required discharge rate, operator access and the desired level of flow control determine the appropriate design.

Does a dustproof or sift-resistant FIBC provide a complete barrier?Not automatically. Coated fabric, seam construction and filler cord can reduce powder migration, but sift-resistant does not mean airtight, waterproof or vapour-tight. A validated liner and closure system may be needed for higher containment or barrier requirements.

How are Type A, B, C and D FIBCs selected?Electrostatic FIBC selection must follow a documented risk assessment covering the product, minimum ignition energy, dust or gas atmosphere, filling and discharge process and liner. Type C requires correct grounding; Type D uses dissipative construction under defined conditions. The tested complete system and IEC 61340-4-4 guidance must be followed.

Can you supply FIBCs for food or pharmaceutical applications?FIBCs can be developed for food ingredients and pharmaceutical raw materials, but suitability is application-specific. Required material declarations, hygiene controls, traceability, liner construction, migration or compliance documents and customer audit requirements must be agreed before production.

What products are suitable for ventilated Big Bags?Ventilated FIBCs are commonly considered for products that benefit from airflow, such as selected potatoes, onions, firewood and agricultural produce. Ventilation pattern, product size, moisture behaviour, load and supply-chain conditions must be confirmed for each application.

Can Big Bags be custom printed and fitted with document pockets?Yes. Approved logos, product identification and handling information can be printed within the agreed artwork limits. Document pockets can be specified by size, orientation, opening and position. Printing and removable documents do not replace mandatory labels or dangerous-goods markings.

Can an FIBC be reused?Only an FIBC specifically designed, tested, marked and managed for multiple trips should be considered for reuse. A single-trip bag must not be reused. Inspection, cleaning, tracking and rejection criteria must form part of the controlled reuse system, and the supplier's instructions must be followed.

How should unused or filled FIBCs be stored?Protect FIBCs from sunlight, rain, moisture, chemicals, sharp objects and uncontrolled temperatures. Store them in accordance with the supplier's instructions and inspect the bag, loops and closures before use. Weathering and UV exposure can reduce performance.
