Filling and discharging powders can generate electrostatic charge. Where a combustible dust cloud, flammable gas or solvent atmosphere may be present, the FIBC must be selected as part of a complete ignition-risk assessment rather than by product name alone.
IEC 61340-4-4:2018 establishes electrostatic classification, test methods, design and performance requirements and safe-use guidance for FIBCs and liners used in potentially explosive atmospheres. The tested combination—including the liner, labels and document pockets—matters.
Understanding FIBC Types B, C and D
Type B FIBCs are designed with a limited breakdown voltage but do not dissipate charge. Type C FIBCs incorporate interconnected conductive elements and must be correctly connected to earth during filling and discharge. Type D FIBCs use static-dissipative construction and are intended to operate without grounding, subject to their tested design and instructions.
These classifications are not interchangeable. A liner can change the electrostatic behaviour of the complete package, and an incorrectly selected or incorrectly used FIBC can defeat the intended protection.
Information Required for Safe Selection
The end user should provide the powder characteristics, minimum ignition energy where known, filling and discharge rates, presence of flammable gases or vapours, hazardous-area classification, equipment grounding arrangements, liner needs and environmental conditions. The responsible safety specialist must assess both the contents and the surrounding atmosphere.
Any supplied static-protective FIBC must be supported by the applicable classification and test documentation for the specific construction. Site procedures, inspection, grounding where required, operator training and the manufacturer’s instructions remain essential parts of safe use.
