Bitumen packaging requirements depend strongly on the product form and temperature. Solid pieces, flakes or granules handled near ambient temperature present a different packaging problem from a process that fills or handles material at elevated temperature.
The outer FIBC, inner liner, seams, closures and handling system must be reviewed for chemical compatibility, temperature, target load, storage duration and the customer’s downstream process. A conventional polypropylene FIBC should never be assumed suitable for hot filling.
Liner and Temperature Compatibility
For solid bitumen products, a liner may help contain smaller particles and protect the packed material from external contamination or moisture. Film type, thickness, seals and closure must be selected for the product condition and transport environment.
If filling, storage or discharge involves elevated temperatures, the maximum material and surface temperatures, contact duration and cooling profile must be provided. Any requirement for the liner or package to enter a downstream melting process needs explicit compatibility testing and customer approval; it cannot be inferred from a general product name.
Project Data Required
Provide the bitumen grade and physical form, filling and maximum exposure temperatures, bulk density, particle size, target net weight, required barrier, filling method, closure method, pallet and container conditions, storage duration and discharge process.
The final construction, safe working load, safety factor and handling instructions must be confirmed through the applicable test and approval process. Where the material is classified for transport, dangerous-goods requirements must be assessed separately before an FIBC is selected.
Custom Production and International Orders
Outer bag and liner construction are customized only after product form, temperature and downstream process are reviewed. Minimum order quantity varies by specification. Production lead time and container-loading options depend on the bag type, order quantity and international delivery plan.
Related information: review custom FIBC inner liners, filling and discharge options, and UN FIBCs where transport classification requires them.
