How to Choose Seedling Grow Bags for Nurseries

A seedling grow bag has to hold soil, water and a growing root system for weeks, months or even years, often outdoors under strong sunlight. The right bag depends less on price per piece and more on how long the plant will stay in it, how large it will grow and the conditions in the nursery.

This guide explains the main points nursery buyers should define before ordering seedling and nursery grow bags: plant type, bag size, micron thickness, drainage, material and UV resistance.

1. Start with the plant and the growing period

Vegetable and flower seedlings usually stay in the bag for a short period before transplanting, so small, lighter bags are sufficient. Fruit saplings, forestry seedlings and landscape trees can remain in the bag for one to several years and need larger, thicker bags that keep their strength for the whole growing period.

2. Choose the bag size, not only the volume

Seedling bags are specified by their flat width and height. Once filled, the bag forms a cylinder whose diameter and usable soil volume depend on the flat width, the height and whether the bag is gusseted. The table below shows typical sizes from Elay Plastic's standard range:

Flat Size (W × H)Average ThicknessDrainage HolesTypical Plants
9 × 11 cm70 – 90 µm2 – 4Tomato, pepper, eggplant and flower seedlings
13 × 27 cm110 – 130 µm6Citrus, olive cuttings and grapevine saplings
15 × 28 cm120 – 140 µm6 – 8Dwarf fruit trees (apple, pear, peach)
22 × 40 cm160 – 200 µm10Walnut, mulberry, chestnut and large forest trees
25 × 50 cm200 – 250 µm12Extra-large saplings, rootstock and landscape trees

The complete size table is available on the Seedling Bags product page. Production is not limited to these sizes; any bag size can be manufactured.

3. Match the thickness to size and time in the bag

Thickness should increase with the bag size and with the length of time the plant stays in it. Small seedling bags are typically produced at 70–90 micron, while bags for large saplings and trees reach 200–250 micron. All Elay Plastic bags over 40 L are produced at 200 micron because of their volume, weight and the long period trees remain in them. Thicker bags can be produced on request, subject to volume.

4. Define the drainage holes

Drainage prevents waterlogging and supports healthy roots. The number of holes generally increases with bag size, from 2–4 holes in small seedling bags to 12 holes in the largest sizes. The drainage hole configuration can be changed on request for suitable volumes, according to the growing medium and irrigation method.

5. Insist on virgin material and UV resistance

Bags made from recycled material tend to break down rapidly in harsh climates, especially when plants stay in them for long periods. Elay Plastic supplies only bags made from 100% virgin plastic, and all seedling bags are produced as UV-resistant for outdoor nursery conditions.

6. Use pieces per kg to plan quantities

Seedling bags are often compared by the number of pieces per kilogram. This figure depends on the bag size, thickness and gusset construction, so it is a useful way to compare offers and plan quantities for a nursery season.

Plan packing and shipment for large orders

Nursery and agricultural development projects often order seedling bags in the hundreds of thousands or millions. Such orders are packed on pallets and loaded into containers, so buyers should agree on packing, loading and delivery schedule requirements in advance.

7. Give the manufacturer a complete specification

For an accurate proposal, provide the plant type, flat size or required volume, thickness, drainage preference, estimated quantity and delivery country. This allows the bag to be configured around the actual growing period rather than a generic size.

Seedling Grow Bag Selection for Nurseries

Seedling grow bag selection should consider the plant type, the time it will stay in the bag, flat size, micron thickness, drainage holes and UV-resistant virgin material.

Standard sizes range from 9 × 11 cm for vegetable seedlings to 25 × 50 cm for large saplings and trees, and any size can be produced to the nursery's requirements.
